Ceramics - Level 2 Award in Creative Craft

An improver-level ceramics course covering hand-building, wheel-throwing, surface decoration, glazing, kiln processes and independent project development.
About this course
The course combines demonstrations, guided research, practical studio sessions, tutorials and critiques. Learners refine hand-building and practise wheel-throwing while exploring slips, oxides, underglazes and layered glaze applications. They also examine historical and contemporary ceramic practice, then use research to plan and produce individual work based on a brief or their own ideas. Progress is documented through sketchbooks, written reflections, photographs and digital records. Continuous assessment includes tutorials, group critiques and unit tasks, leading to a portfolio of evidence rather than formal exams.
What you'll learn
- Refine hand-building methods to produce more controlled and complex ceramic forms
- Apply surface decoration and basic glaze testing and layering techniques
- Develop and complete ceramic work from a brief or personal creative intention
- Operate kilns and follow safe ceramic working practices
- Use research, documentation and reflection to support and evaluate a ceramic project
