Ceramics Monday evening: Intermediate and Advanced levels

About this course

Learners work on individual ceramic projects while refining hand-building, throwing, decorating, glazing and on-glaze techniques. Tutor demonstrations and discussions introduce methods selected for the group’s projects, with opportunities to examine materials and approaches in greater detail. The course also uses group and individual discussions for sharing practice, self-assessment and problem-solving. Slideshows and contextual study cover historical and contemporary ceramics, supported by reference resources and suggested museum and gallery visits.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for Intermediate and Advanced learners who have already practised fundamental ceramic processes. Participants develop individual projects alongside new and returning students, with demonstrations focused on extending rather than introducing basic methods.

• Previous study of core hand-building techniques is expected
• Basic knowledge of slips, oxides and glaze application is expected
• Wheel users should already be able to centre clay
• Wheel throwing and wedging involve a moderate level of physical activity

Before you go

• Wheel throwing and wedging clay require a moderate level of physical fitness; concerns or access requirements can be discussed with the tutor.
• The studio is on the third floor and has lift access.
• An apron or old shirt is required.
• A notebook and pen may be useful. Participants can bring tools they already have, and the tutor can advise on any further tools to purchase.
• A range of clays and glazes is available for studio work.
