Ceramics Throwing Absolute – Beginners

About this course

The course introduces throwing with stoneware clay, from preparing and centring clay to shaping functional tableware on the potter’s wheel. Participants work on techniques including turning footings, making and attaching handles, applying surface patterns or texture, and glazing finished pieces. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations with practical studio work, personalised feedback and regular discussions. A Personal Learning Plan helps participants set goals and review their progress, supported by written records of their practice.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners and learners with limited experience using a potter’s wheel. No previous experience is required, although some familiarity with clay would be advantageous. Sessions involve demonstrations, individual practice and regular tutor feedback.

• Progress is reviewed through Personal Learning Plans, written practice records and tutor discussions

Before you go

• Clay must be purchased from the College Shop. Slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the clay purchase.
• An FFP3 mask is required for glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians’ office.
• Ceramic tools are provided.
• Finished work typically needs drying and two firing stages before collection, so it may not be ready immediately after the course.
• Learners are encouraged to keep a sketchbook or digital record of their work, including materials, techniques, glazes, firing temperatures and dimensions.
• Food and drink are not permitted in the studio, and learners should allow time at the end of each class for tidying.
