Ceramics Throwing Advanced Masterclass

About this course

Participants develop self-initiated throwing projects, setting learning aims with the tutor and using regular feedback to review their progress. The course combines practical demonstrations with group and individual tutorials, allowing learners to focus on their own work while drawing on suggested project ideas where needed. Learners document each piece and their practice, including relevant making and firing details. Progress is reviewed through Personal Learning Plans, written records and discussions with the tutor.

Is this course right for you?

This advanced-level course is intended for learners with existing ceramics knowledge who are confident working on the potter’s wheel. Participation combines independent project work with group and individual tutorials, tutor discussions and regular progress review.

Before you go

• Clay must be purchased from the College Shop. Slip, glazes and kiln firings are included in the clay cost and can be obtained as required from the technicians’ office.
• An FFP3 mask is required for learners taking part in glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians’ office.
• Ceramic tools are provided.
• Finished work is typically ready for collection after bisque and glaze firing; the provider advises allowing around two weeks for drying and bisque firing, followed by a further one to two weeks after glaze firing.
• Learners are encouraged to keep work records in a sketchbook or digitally, including photographs where appropriate.
• Food and drink are not permitted in the studio, and learners should allow time at the end of each class to tidy their workspace.
