Ceramics Throwing – Beginners/Post Beginners

About this course

Learners practise centring and controlling clay on the potter’s wheel, making forms such as bowls, mugs and jugs, and attaching handles. The course also introduces selecting and preparing clay, hand-building, decoration and glazing, with opportunities to produce a finished glazed piece. Teaching combines guided practical work with tutor feedback, Personal Learning Plans and regular discussions about progress. Learners record technical notes, sketches, inspiration and details of their making process in a sketchbook, notebook or digital format.

Is this course right for you?

The course is suitable for complete beginners and for learners with some previous experience. Participation involves regular practical work, tutor discussions and keeping written or digital records of processes and results.

• Progress is reviewed through a Personal Learning Plan and written tutor responses.

Before you go

• Clay must be purchased from the College Shop. Slip, glazes and kiln firings are included with the clay purchase.
• An FFP3 mask is required for learners taking part in glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians’ office.
• Ceramic tools are provided.
• Finished work is collected after it has completed its bisque and glaze firings.
• Learners should keep a sketchbook, notebook or digital record of their work, including photographs where appropriate.
