Ceramics Throwing – Improvers

About this course

The course develops throwing technique through work on well-made simple forms, alongside experiments with new shapes and forms. Participants will throw, turn and glaze pots, measure their work and refine dimensions, including through projects such as fitting a cup and saucer together. Suggested projects and demonstrations provide direction, while learners can also pursue their own ideas. Individual goals are recorded in a Personal Learning Plan, with progress reviewed through tutor discussions, feedback and written records of clay, decoration, glazes, firing temperatures and dimensions.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for improvers who already throw pots and are comfortable centring and keeping clay on centre. Participation combines tutor-guided exercises with self-directed projects, regular discussion and ongoing records of individual work.

• Previous throwing experience is expected.
• Learners may follow their own project ideas as well as suggested projects.
• Progress is reviewed through Personal Learning Plans, tutor feedback and written work records.

Before you go

• Clay must be purchased from the college shop; slip, glazes and kiln firings are included with the clay.
• An FFP3 mask is required for glazing activities and can be purchased from the technicians’ office.
• Ceramic tools are provided.
• Learners are encouraged to keep records in a sketchbook or digitally, including photographs where appropriate.
• Food and drink are not allowed in the studio.
• Learners should allow time at the end of each class to tidy the studio.
• Finished pieces are collected after bisque and glaze firing.
