Ceramics Throwing – Intermediate

About this course

Participants use extended studio time to develop their own throwing projects while consolidating wheel skills through demonstrations, practice and tutor feedback. The course explores repeat throwing for sets, bowls, cylinders, foot rings, fitted lids, altered forms and oval containers. Further work covers adding coils to thrown forms, reclaiming clay, decorating with oxides and experimenting with glazes. Individual goals are recorded and reviewed through Personal Learning Plans, notes and regular discussions with the tutor.

What you'll learn

• Produce repeated thrown forms for matching sets of bowls or mugs
• Create and fit a turned lid for a container
• Construct oval containers by cutting and reforming a wheel-thrown bowl
• Extend a small thrown bowl using coils without centring a large quantity of clay
• Turn foot rings and throw cylinders that do not require turning
• Apply oxides and glazes to develop and vary ceramic surfaces

Is this course right for you?

This intermediate course is intended for learners who already have some ceramics knowledge and are comfortable working on the potter’s wheel. Participation involves regular studio attendance, individual project work, practice, demonstrations and discussions about progress. Learners must be aged 19 or over on 31 August before the course starts.

Before you go

• Bring an apron, sketchbook and pen to the first class.
• Equipment is provided if needed; bringing personal tools is optional.
• Learners may bring their own materials, although on-site storage is limited to items purchased from the college.
• Allow 15 minutes at the end of each class for tidying the studio.
• Food and drink are not permitted in the studio; a nearby hub area is available for refreshments.
