About this course

Participants develop individual ceramic projects while exploring different approaches to making, decorating and glazing. Tutor demonstrations cover hand-building, throwing, decoration, glazing and on-glaze techniques, with guidance adapted to project needs. The course also uses group and individual discussions for sharing practice, self-assessment and problem-solving. Slideshows and reference materials introduce historical and contemporary ceramic practice, helping participants consider techniques and materials in relation to their own work.

What you'll learn

  • Refine selected ceramic-making skills across hand-building, throwing, decoration and glazing.
  • Evaluate techniques and materials in relation to individual ceramic projects.
  • Recognise historical and contemporary approaches to ceramic practice.
  • Apply safe studio practices with awareness of health and safety considerations.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners who have already practised fundamental ceramics techniques and processes, rather than those starting from scratch. It involves developing personal projects alongside other students, with group and individual discussion. Wheel throwing and wedging clay require a moderate level of physical fitness.

  • Previous ceramics practice, including core hand-building techniques, is required.
  • Learners using the wheel should already be able to centre clay.
  • The ceramics studio is on the third floor, with lift access.

Before you go

  • Bring an apron or old shirt.
  • A notebook and pen may be useful.
  • The tutor will advise on which tools to purchase.
  • A range of clays and glazes is available in the studio.
