About this course

Participants develop personal ceramic projects while refining making, decorating and glazing skills. Tutor demonstrations cover hand-building, throwing, on-glaze and other relevant techniques, with guidance adapted to project needs. The course also uses group and individual discussions for questioning techniques, sharing practice, self-assessment and problem-solving. Slideshows and reference materials introduce historical and contemporary ceramic practice, while museum and gallery visits are encouraged as part of contextual study. Work includes access to throwing wheels, clays and glazes in the studio.

What you'll learn

  • Refine selected ceramic making skills across hand-building, throwing, decoration and glazing.
  • Evaluate techniques and materials in relation to individual ceramic projects.
  • Discuss historical and contemporary approaches to ceramic practice.
  • Apply health and safety principles through safe studio practice.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for learners who have already practised fundamental ceramic processes and core hand-building techniques. Participants develop their own projects while contributing to group and individual discussions. Wheel work requires an existing ability to centre clay, and throwing and wedging involve a moderate level of physical fitness.

  • Previous study covering core ceramic techniques is required.
  • The studio is accessible by lift.

Before you go

  • Bring an apron or old shirt.
  • A notebook and pen may be useful.
  • The tutor will advise on tools to purchase.
  • Clay is charged at £3 per kilo, including bisque and glaze firing.
