About this course

The course introduces different clays and hand-building methods, with demonstrations on shaping, moulding and constructing ceramic forms. Participants explore surface decoration with coloured slip and receive a fundamental introduction to glazing, while intermediate learners can extend their technical and design skills through individual projects. Teaching combines tutor demonstrations, project guidance, group and individual discussions, historical and contemporary references, and regular feedback. Learners are encouraged to test different making, decorating and glazing approaches while developing their own ideas.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for complete beginners and intermediate learners working alongside one another. Beginners can develop foundational clay skills, while those with more experience can work on individual projects and extend their technical and design approaches. Sessions include physical activities such as wedging and rolling clay, requiring a moderate level of physical fitness.

Before you go

  • Bring an apron or old shirt for studio work.
  • Participants are expected to use their own tools; basic tool packs are available to purchase.
  • A notebook and pen may be useful.
  • Clay is processed through bisque and glaze firing.
  • Speak to the tutor about any concerns relating to physical activity, such as back problems.
