About this course

Participants explore different clays and learn to shape, mould and construct ceramic forms using basic hand-building methods. Sessions combine tutor demonstrations with guided project work, individual experimentation and discussions of historical and contemporary approaches. Beginners receive an introduction to coloured slip and fundamental glazing, while intermediate learners can extend their technical and design skills through self-directed projects. Tutor feedback is provided throughout, with opportunities to investigate methods of making, surface decoration and glazing in a mixed-level studio group.

What you'll learn

  • Construct ceramic forms using a range of hand-building techniques
  • Manipulate different types of clay to investigate their possibilities
  • Apply coloured slip and fundamental glazing techniques to ceramic surfaces
  • Develop individual approaches to making, decorating and design
  • Follow safe studio practices when working with clay and ceramics
