About this course

The course introduces clay as a ceramic material through hand-building methods, including shaping, moulding and constructing forms. Participants examine different clays, experiment with coloured slip decoration and receive an introduction to glazing. Intermediate learners develop their technical and design skills through individual projects and more varied making, decorating and glazing approaches. Teaching includes demonstrations, guidance during project work, group and individual discussions, and regular tutor feedback. Historical and contemporary approaches to ceramics are also introduced, alongside safe studio practice.

The class is designed for complete beginners and intermediate learners, who work alongside one another on guided and individual projects. Beginners can develop foundational making skills, while more experienced participants can extend their technical and design practice. Ceramics involves moderate physical activity, including wedging and rolling clay.

Before you go

  • Participants should bring an apron or old shirt.
  • Participants are asked to use their own tools; basic tool packs can be purchased.
  • A notebook and pen may be useful.
  • Bisque and glaze firing are included with the clay charge.
  • The ceramics studio has lift access.
