About this course

Participants develop work across wheel throwing and hand building, with particular attention to glazing and surface decoration. Tutor demonstrations are combined with project-based learning, regular feedback and opportunities to work on group set projects or more individual pieces. The course introduces historical and contemporary approaches to ceramics while supporting learners at different stages. Those with intermediate experience can consolidate existing techniques, while more advanced participants can pursue ambitious personal projects with targeted guidance.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for mixed-level learners who already have some familiarity with clay, including those developing intermediate skills and more advanced makers working on personal projects. Participation involves individual and group projects, tutor feedback and some moderate physical activity such as wedging or rolling clay.

  • Some previous experience of either wheel throwing or hand building is required
  • Not suitable for complete beginners
  • Moderate physical activity is involved
  • The studio has lift access

Before you go

  • Bring an apron or old shirt.
  • A notebook and pen may be useful.
  • The tutor will advise on tools to purchase.
  • Clay work includes bisque and glaze firing.
  • The ceramics studio is on the fifth floor and has lift access.
