About this course

This course develops programming skills for AI applications, beginning with Python syntax, functions, loops, data structures, scripting and debugging. Learners use NumPy, Pandas and Matplotlib for data work and visualisation, and are introduced to TensorFlow and Keras. The course also covers GitHub, vectors, matrices, transformations, derivatives, gradients and the fundamentals of neural networks, including activation functions and model evaluation. Practical work involves applying Python to real-world datasets and developing projects such as image-recognition or predictive models. Each unit is assessed through internally set and marked assignments.

What you'll learn

  • Write and debug Python scripts using functions, loops and data structures.
  • Use NumPy, Pandas and Matplotlib for data manipulation and visualisation.
  • Apply vectors, matrices, transformations, derivatives and gradients to AI-related problems.
  • Build and evaluate simple neural network models using introductory TensorFlow and Keras techniques.
  • Develop AI applications using real-world datasets, such as image-recognition or predictive models.
  • Use GitHub for code management and collaboration.

Is this course right for you?

The course is designed for learners with good general IT knowledge and existing coding proficiency, including people working in IT or changing careers. Entry is subject to tutor approval. The advanced level indicates study beyond introductory programming, and participation includes substantial independent reading and practical work.

  • Applicants may be asked to discuss their coding experience and provide a code sample at interview.
  • Level 2 English and maths, equivalent to GCSE grade 4/C or Functional Skills Level 2, are formally required; an assessment may be arranged where formal qualifications are unavailable.
  • Learners should allow at least six hours each week for independent study.
