Chamber music: intermediate

About this course

Participants study and perform a selection of chamber music works in mixed instrumental groups, with repertoire chosen in consultation with the tutor according to the players’ abilities and musical interests. The course develops ensemble listening through rehearsal and performance, including attention to rhythm, phrasing, timbre and stylistic detail. Weekly tuition takes place within the different groups. Supporting materials include practice-method handouts and recordings of the repertoire studied, while learners are expected to practise between sessions and prepare for ensemble work.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate instrumentalists, broadly corresponding to learners developing beyond fundamental techniques. The stated playing level is Grade 3–5 for wind and string players or Grade 5–6 for pianists, alongside rhythmic ability and some sight-reading skills. Participants are expected to collaborate, respond to tutor feedback and prepare between sessions.

• Regular attendance and commitment to the ensemble are expected
• Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English
• Class discussions form part of the course

• Participants must bring their own instrument; pianos and music stands are provided.
• Bring a pencil.
• Depending on the repertoire, learners may need to supply their own music. The tutor may also use the Music department’s library or online sources.
