About this course
The course uses picture books and illustrated fiction as starting points for developing character designs, while considering how the skills may transfer to other creative fields. Participants explore figure drawing, proportion and distortion, facial expressions, distinctive silhouettes, colour schemes and the relationship between characters and settings. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations, practical work, individual and group tutoring, and discussion. Examples from historical and contemporary creative practice are used to inform the activities, with opportunities for self-reflection and possible extension work outside class.

Is this course right for you?
Marked Beginner and upwards, the course is presented as an entry point for learners developing character-design skills, without a stated previous-experience requirement. Participation includes practical work, demonstrations, individual and group tutoring, group discussion and reflection on personal work. English-language competency is required to follow instructions and take part in discussions.
- Learners should be able to follow verbal and written instructions, demonstrations and hand-outs in English
- Group discussion forms part of the teaching format
- Additional or extension activities may be set for completion outside class hours
Before you go
- Basic materials and resources are available as part of the course.
- Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas.
- Learners are advised to bring an A3 folder and/or a USB drive to transport work.
- Any additional materials required will be discussed with the tutor.
