Chilean and Argentinean: dictatorships and their legacies

About this course

The course examines the political and historical development of the Chilean and Argentinean dictatorships, comparing their differences and considering questions of justice, human rights and their impact on victims. It places both periods within the wider context of twentieth-century Latin American dictatorships, including US interventions, communism, Salvador Allende and social movements. Teaching centres on group discussion and student participation, supported by music videos, photography, documentaries, text extracts and other shared resources. Sessions also consider how these dictatorships continue to shape political affairs in Chile and Argentina.
