What Elementary (A2) Mandarin means

At A2 Mandarin, learners can handle simple routine exchanges and describe familiar aspects of everyday life.

    我平时坐公共汽车上班,六点回家。

    I normally go to work by bus and return home at six.

    你星期六下午想去看电影吗?

    Would you like to go to the cinema on Saturday afternoon?

  • Talk about the recent past

    昨天我和朋友吃了晚饭,然后去散步了。

    Yesterday I had dinner with friends and then we went for a walk.

About this course

The course develops spoken and written Chinese through topics such as body parts, sports, free time, holidays and visiting places including museums and exhibition centres. Language work includes pronunciation practice, Chinese grammar and character writing, with around 60 to 80 additional characters introduced. Teaching focuses on communication through pair and group work, role plays and games, supported by presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Homework is highly recommended to consolidate class learning.

This course is intended for Elementary (A2) learners who have completed Chinese 2 lower: module 1, studied Chinese for approximately one year recently, or developed equivalent competence. Participation involves spoken interaction, pair work, group work and role plays.

  • Learners should be prepared to take part in spoken and collaborative classroom activities
