What Upper Intermediate (B2) Mandarin means

At B2 Mandarin, learners can communicate fluently on concrete and abstract topics, develop arguments and respond in detail.

  • Support a viewpoint

    虽然这项措施初期需要投入资金,但从长远来看会使整个社区受益。

Although the measure would require initial investment, it would benefit the whole community in the long term.

  • Discuss an abstract issue

    科技让沟通更方便,但也引发了人们对隐私的担忧。

Technology makes communication easier, but it also raises concerns about privacy.

  • Negotiate a solution

    如果把期限延长一周,我们就能在不降低质量的情况下不超出预算。

If we extend the deadline by a week, we can keep the budget without reducing quality.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops communication in Chinese through topics including housing, buying a car in China and environmental problems. Learners revise grammar and pronunciation while extending their vocabulary and moving language use from Pinyin into Chinese characters, including further character writing. Teaching centres on spoken interaction, with pair and group work, role plays, games, presentations, hand-outs and audio-visual resources. Activities practise using a wider range of sentence patterns in both spoken and written Chinese.

What you'll learn

  • Discuss housing-related issues in Chinese
  • Explain and discuss buying a car in China
  • Talk about environmental problems
  • Recognise approximately 60 new Chinese characters and related vocabulary
  • Use a wider range of sentence patterns in spoken and written Chinese

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for upper-intermediate learners who have completed the preceding Chinese 3 module, studied Chinese for around four years recently, or developed equivalent competence. Participation involves spoken interaction, pair and group activities, and responding to explanations in English.

  • Learners need to read course documents and respond to simple instructions and explanations in English.
  • Comfort with numbers used in daily activities, such as money, times and timetables, is needed.
  • Some familiarity with basic grammar terms, including verb, noun and conjugation, would be helpful.

Before you go

  • The course combines the tutor's own materials with content from Discover China Student's Book 2. Learners should check with the teacher before purchasing the book.
  • Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
