What Advanced (C1+) Mandarin means

At C1+ Mandarin, learners can express complex ideas precisely, understand nuance and adapt their language to different contexts.

  • Qualify an argument

    尽管这一论点总体上颇具说服力,却忽略了若干意料之外的后果。

While the argument is broadly convincing, it overlooks several unintended consequences.

  • Convey nuance

    我质疑的并非提案本身,而是其仓促的实施方式。

I do not question the proposal itself, but rather the rushed way it is being implemented.

  • Adapt your register

    鉴于所附的补充资料,烦请您重新考虑这一决定。

In light of the additional information attached, I would be grateful if you would reconsider this decision.

These are general examples of language use at this level, not a description of any individual course syllabus.

About this course

The course develops advanced Chinese through news-based material covering areas such as business, sport, education, technology and entertainment. Articles are adapted for teaching, with their difficulty adjusted following an initial assessment, and learners work towards reading academic texts. Teaching centres on communication, combining pair and group activities, role plays, games, presentations and audio-visual resources. Speaking and listening form a substantial part of the lessons, alongside work on vocabulary, Chinese characters and advanced grammar.

What you'll learn

  • Expand vocabulary through news and current-affairs material
  • Speak Chinese with greater fluency and accuracy
  • Strengthen listening skills and reading of Chinese characters
  • Consolidate advanced grammatical structures
