About this course

The course examines the heritage and science of indigo dyeing through environmentally friendly methods. Participants will create and maintain a fructose-based indigo vat, explore shibori resist and tie-dye techniques, and use plant-based fixatives and mordants to set colour. Teaching combines demonstrations, group discussions and individual experiments with fabric and pattern-making. Sessions also introduce basic pH principles relevant to dyeing and consider the use of upcycled fabrics within sustainable textile practice.
