About this course

The course explores collage and assemblage in relation to modernist and contemporary art, examining how materials, images, text and objects can be reworked to create meaning. Participants will investigate two- and three-dimensional approaches through techniques including paper collage, decoupage, bricolage, installation, construction, monoprinting, image transfer and wall reliefs. Teaching combines practical exercises and demonstrations with one-to-one tutorials, group discussions and visual lectures. The course also considers contemporary publishing, archival approaches, reclamation, recycling and the relationship between making, interpretation and presentation.

What you'll learn

  • Apply mixed-media techniques across drawing, painting, collage and assemblage.
  • Combine two- and three-dimensional approaches when developing mixed-media work.
  • Relate material choices, images and objects to metaphor, meaning and communication.
  • Contextualise painting, assemblage and collage within modernism and contemporary art.
  • Develop and present ideas through experimentation, reflection and critical judgement.

Is this course right for you?

The course is open to absolute beginners, intermediate learners and artists. Its format combines practical making with visual lectures, individual tutorials, group discussions and reflection on participants’ own work, so learners should be prepared to engage in both individual and shared learning.
