About this course
The course develops jewellery-making skills through demonstrations, guided projects, handouts and tutor feedback. Participants test techniques through samples before incorporating selected processes into finished pieces, working with methods such as stone setting, enamelling, engraving, etching, wax carving, Delft clay casting, chain-making, cold connections and CAD-based production. Design development is supported through sketchbook drawings, notes and independent research. Learners create a portfolio of samples and finished jewellery, then discuss and present their work through group evaluations and an exhibition. Teaching includes both group discussions and individual conversations with tutors.
What you'll learn
- Construct chains, jump rings and catches using soldering and cold-connection techniques.
- Create bezel, tube and flush settings for stones.
- Texture and colour metal using hammers, stencils, a rolling mill, oxidisers and patinas.
- Apply enamelling, engraving or etching to jewellery surfaces.
- Produce jewellery components using CAD, wax carving and Delft clay casting.
- Develop a portfolio of design samples and finished pieces using sketchbook research and project planning.
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for learners who have completed a beginner jewellery course or have a good understanding of basic jewellery-making skills. Participation combines individual project work and design research with tutor discussions, group evaluations and presentation of work.
- Some independent research and design work is expected outside class.
- Learners discuss their work in group evaluations and contribute to an end-of-course exhibition.
Before you go
- Most basic jewellery-making tools and equipment are provided.
- Basic quantities of materials such as copper, brass, paper, enamel and workshop chemicals are provided.
- Participants need to buy some saw blades, precious metals and stones.
- A sketchbook is required for design work and notes.
- Sensible closed footwear must be worn. Sandals, open-toe shoes and small pumps are not permitted.
