About this course
Participants develop sculpture through individual and group projects, supported by one-to-one tutorials, critiques, discussions and independent studio time. The course moves from tutored material processes towards thematic and self-directed work, with opportunities to explore casting, construction, assemblage and other sculptural methods. Teaching also includes gallery visits and video lectures. Participants examine contemporary and historical sculpture, considering how research, themes and ideas can inform the development of three-dimensional work.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for improvers with some previous experience of sculpture or a related art discipline. Participation includes group projects, discussions and critiques alongside independently directed studio work. Learners should be able to follow written and spoken instructions, demonstrations and health and safety information, use simple measurements and calculations, and complete specified work outside class.

Before you go
- General tools and equipment are provided.
- Most materials for sampling and experimentation are covered, but materials for larger pieces may need to be purchased or supplied by the learner.
- A sketchbook and drawing materials are recommended.
- Sturdy closed-toe shoes are required. Old clothes or overalls are strongly recommended.
- Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required.
- The plasma cutter may pose a serious risk to people with pacemakers. They cannot remain in the room while it is in use and should contact the Sculpture Department before enrolling.
