About this course
Participants develop clarinet technique through work on articulation, breathing, dynamics, expression, fingering, tone and control across a wider range of notes. The course also covers pulse, rhythm and reading basic notation, with repertoire ranging from classical to jazz. Teaching combines tutor demonstration and explanation with individual playing, group ensemble work and discussion. Simple improvisation is introduced alongside playing tunes and ensemble music.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for clarinettists who have been learning for at least a term, rather than those starting from scratch. Sessions involve both individual playing and ensemble work, along with discussion and following written and verbal instructions in English.
- Regular practice outside class is expected, ideally for at least 15 minutes each day.
- Learners need to engage in class discussions and follow written and verbal instructions in English.

- Bring a Bb clarinet, reeds and a pencil.
- The tutor provides some musical material.
- The required text is Abracadabra Clarinet, 3rd edition, by Jonathan Rutland.
