About this course

The course develops clarinet technique through exercises covering tone, articulation, breath support, rhythm and finger work across the instrument’s range. Learners study set pieces, bring their own-choice repertoire for masterclass-style work, and play in small groups and as a full ensemble. Teaching includes demonstrations, discussion, peer and tutor feedback, practice planning, and the use of digital listening or video resources where appropriate. The repertoire and activities are adapted to the needs of the class, with opportunities to perform during the year.

What you'll learn

  • Apply exercises for improving tone, articulation, breath support and finger technique across the clarinet’s range
  • Identify technical problems and plan more efficient, effective practice
  • Prepare and perform solo pieces at around Grade 3 standard and above
  • Use strategies for managing performance nerves
  • Learn and perform ensemble parts in chamber, band or orchestral settings

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate clarinet players who can read music and play repertoire around Grades 3-5, or who are relatively confident across all three registers in several sharp and flat keys. Participation involves solo work, ensemble playing, discussion, feedback and regular practice outside class.

  • Requires stamina for sustained playing during the session
  • Learners need to follow and contribute to discussions in English
  • Regular practice and completion of activities outside class are expected

Before you go

  • Bring a Bb clarinet with mouthpiece, ligature, strength 2.5 or 3 Vandoren reeds, cleaning cloth or pull-through, cork grease, pencil, notebook and clarinet stand.
  • The listed study texts are Studies for Clarinet by Eva Perenyi and 20 Crucial Clarinet Studies by Helen Madden.
  • A music stand is recommended for practice at home.
