Clarinet repertoire workshop

About this course

The workshop studies two or three pieces each term, considering their musical interpretation alongside the technical demands of the repertoire. Weekly scales, studies and exercises address breathing, tone projection, articulation, intonation, finger dexterity and the altissimo register. Teaching combines group playing with the tutor and individual work. Participants contribute to class discussions, study ensemble parts and prepare for an end-of-term performance, while applying technical and musicianship concepts to solo and group playing.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for intermediate clarinettists working with repertoire at approximately Grade 5 standard and above. Participants work both individually and as part of a group, contribute to discussions, follow written and verbal instructions in English, and are expected to maintain regular practice outside class.

• A good basic sound and fluent playing in the middle and chalumeau registers are expected
• Some experience of the altissimo register is required
• The repertoire includes Classical, Romantic and modern composers

Before you go

• Participants need to bring their own Bb clarinet and a supply of reeds
• Most course materials are provided through Google Classroom
• Sheet music for solo repertoire may need to be purchased
