About this course
The course develops classical guitar technique through work on simple repertoire, scales, music reading and aural awareness. Learners practise playing melodies and pieces using thumb and fingers, while building familiarity with repertoire at approximately ABRSM Grade 2 level. Teaching includes both solo and ensemble repertoire, with ensemble pieces arranged in several parts. The course broadly follows Trinity College Grade One requirements and includes musical knowledge work at ABRSM Grade 1 level.
What you'll learn
- Play classical pieces in more than one part using the thumb and fingers
- Sight-read notes E, F, G, A, B, C, D and E on strings 6, 5 and 4
- Complete aural awareness and musical knowledge tests at ABRSM Grade 1 level
- Play the harmonic minor scales in A and E
- Perform classical ensemble pieces in several parts
Is this course right for you?
This course is intended for classical guitarists progressing beyond fundamental techniques and simple first-position reading. The stated entry level is learners who have completed two terms of the course or an equivalent, and who can demonstrate established classical guitar technique.
- Prior study or equivalent experience is expected
- Regular practice between classes is part of the course
Before you go
- Bring a classical guitar and a footstool or guitar support.
- A tutor book may be required as advised by the teacher.
- Bring a pencil and ring binder for sheet music and handouts.
- Students are expected to practise for 20 minutes daily on four days each week.
