About this course

The course develops advanced classical guitar technique through melody playing, legato, chordal accompaniment, scales and arpeggios. Participants extend their fretboard knowledge to the 12th fret, explore alternative tunings such as open G and drop D, and study the construction of extended chords including 7th, 9th, 11th and 13th chords. Teaching takes place through group practice and playing, with opportunities for both solo performance and guitar ensemble work. Sessions include analysis of the pieces being studied, and regular practice between classes is expected.

What you'll learn

  • Read notation up to the 12th fret.
  • Play melodies with harmonic accompaniment.
  • Perform three-octave scales and arpeggios.
  • Use alternative tunings including open G and drop D.
  • Play solo and ensemble pieces while applying improved left- and right-hand technique.

Is this course right for you?

  • Previous advanced study is specified, through Classical Guitar Level 4 or an earlier advanced class.
  • Regular practice between sessions is expected.
  • The course combines ensemble playing with individual solo opportunities.
