About this course

The course explores predominantly classical songs through group learning and individual presentations to classmates. Participants work on vocal and physical exercises, technique, repertoire selection and performance communication, with guidance from a professional accompanist on matters such as tempo. Teaching centres on individual work, supported by demonstrations, short lectures and discussions linked to ongoing performances. Learners can also propose songs within the course themes. Self- and peer-evaluation are used to examine vocal and performance technique.

What you'll learn

  • Perform classical songs for an audience of peers
  • Select repertoire appropriate to an individual voice
  • Apply vocal and physical exercises to support singing technique
  • Work with an accompanist on performance details such as tempo
  • Evaluate vocal and performance technique using self- and peer-assessment

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for singers with experience of group singing classes and a reasonable knowledge of singing. Learners should be able to learn new repertoire, take part in class discussions and present work to their peers. The intermediate level suggests study beyond fundamental singing skills, while a basic understanding of musical notation is required.

  • Sight-singing is not necessary
  • Learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English

Before you go

  • Bring a notebook and pencil.
  • Bring sheet music as required.
  • Course materials are shared through Google Classroom.
