About this course
Participants prepare classical songs independently and present them regularly to the class, with repertoire projects potentially covering English, Italian, French and German works. Sessions include vocal warm-ups, physical and technical exercises, demonstrations, discussion and individual feedback, with a professional accompanist supporting work on tempo and delivery. Teaching focuses on technique, communication, interpretation and performance, including the presentation of more musically complex pieces from memory. Learners also explore repertoire choices and use self- and peer evaluation to examine vocal and performance technique.
What you'll learn
- Perform selected classical songs from memory with an understanding of their text
- Apply vocal and physical exercises to support a more settled singing technique
- Select repertoire appropriate to the voice
- Use performance techniques to communicate songs to an audience
- Evaluate vocal and performance technique through self- and peer assessment
Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for experienced improver-level singers who can prepare songs independently and present them in front of the class. It requires a reliable vocal technique, an intermediate understanding of musical notation and the ability to learn repertoire from memory. Sight-singing is not required, but learners need to follow written and verbal instructions in English and contribute to discussions.
- Previous study up to Singing workshop level or at least four years of one-to-one lessons is expected
- Learners prepare and practise repertoire outside class
- The class is mainly individual work presented within a group setting
- Learners should be able to perform regularly in front of peers
Before you go
- Bring a notebook and pencil.
- Sheet music may be required, and a course book may occasionally be advised.
- Learners are encouraged to obtain copies of the repertoire being studied, using new or second-hand sources, libraries or suitable online scores.
