Classics Revisited: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen & Longbourn by Jo Baker

About this course

The course examines how Pride and Prejudice and Longbourn construct characters, themes, plots and narrative viewpoints, while placing both novels in their historical and social contexts. It also considers how Baker’s companion novel responds to, extends or challenges Austen’s work, using ideas including fidelity, writing back and intertextuality. Teaching combines short tutor presentations, structured discussion, close reading, analysis and additional materials such as video clips. Weekly reading and advance questions support the class discussions.
