About this course
Working from a life model and a single pose, participants study the human form and basic anatomy while developing a small clay sculpture. Teaching combines individual guidance, demonstrations, practical work and group discussion. The course covers effective clay handling, ways to create surface texture and the steps involved in preparing a sculpture for the kiln. There is also an opportunity to consider the work of sculptors who have worked from life models.

Is this course right for you?
The course welcomes learners of all abilities and experience levels. Sessions focus mainly on individual practice with guidance, alongside some group discussion. Participants should be able to follow written and verbal instructions, take part in discussions, and use simple measurements and calculations.

Before you go
- Essential materials and equipment are included.
- A sketchbook, pencils and a pen are recommended for sketching and note-taking.
- A camera or smartphone may be useful for documenting work in progress.
- Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required; old clothes or overalls are recommended.
- Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required.
- The finished sculpture will be fired and collected from the studio. Collection arrangements will be provided near the end of the course; fired work may be heavy and cannot be posted or delivered.
