About this course

The course examines three-dimensional form through the study of a portrait head made from a life model. Participants develop a clay sculpture over the course, focusing on structure, facial form and the use of clay to convey mood and character. Teaching is centred on individual practice with guidance, supported by demonstrations, hand-outs and discussion of key topics in working from a life model. The completed head is prepared for firing as a ceramic sculpture.

What you'll learn

  • Construct an armature suitable for a portrait head
  • Identify and apply an understanding of selected facial muscles
  • Manipulate clay to express mood and character in a portrait
  • Prepare a clay portrait head for firing

Is this course right for you?

The course welcomes learners of all ability levels. Participants should be able to follow simple written and spoken instructions, use basic measurements and calculations, and contribute to group discussion. Most work is undertaken individually with guidance, alongside study from a life model.

  • The teaching combines individual practice with discussion of working from a life model
  • Learners need to follow demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information
