Cloisonné Enamelling

About this course

Participants work through the main stages of cloisonné enamelling on a domed fine silver disc, preparing the surface and wire before applying finely ground enamel. Demonstrations and guided exercises cover colour blending, layering, shading, firing, counter-enamelling and finishing. Individual support is provided as learners use hand tools and a kiln, address common enamelling problems, and grind and polish the surface to a smooth finish. Test pieces may also be made on copper.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginner and intermediate makers who already have some experience of enamelling or metalwork. It involves working independently in a workshop, following demonstrations and guided exercises, and using basic hand tools such as those used for sawing, filing or soldering.

• Some prior enamelling or metalwork experience is expected
• Participants should be comfortable working independently in a workshop setting

Before you go

• A fine silver disc is provided for the main project.
• Copper may be available for making test pieces.
• Health and safety practices for working with leaded enamels are covered during the course.
