Sewing & Clothesmaking

Beginner

A practical beginner-level clothesmaking course covering commercial patterns, garment construction and more effective sewing-machine use.

About this course

Learners develop clothesmaking skills by working from a commercial paper pattern to create a simple garment. The course covers taking body measurements, selecting a suitable size, adjusting fit, choosing fabric, interpreting pattern instructions, and laying out and cutting the pattern. Pattern making is not included. Teaching combines practical demonstrations, individual support, group discussion and feedback. Garment construction introduces techniques including darts, zips, buttons, interfacing and accurate marking, alongside safe working practices. Progress is monitored through continuous assessment and an Individual Learning Plan.

What you'll learn

  • Operate and maintain a domestic sewing machine safely, including threading and bobbin winding.
  • Take accurate body measurements and use them to select and adjust a commercial pattern.
  • Interpret commercial pattern instructions and prepare pattern pieces for cutting.
  • Cut garment pieces accurately and mark positions using techniques such as tailor’s tacks.
  • Construct neat darts, zip openings and button fastenings.
  • Select interfacing to suit the fabric and apply appropriate garment-making techniques.
