Advanced sewing course combining demonstrations, guided practice and individual projects to develop garment construction and pattern-cutting skills.

About this course

Learners develop advanced garment construction techniques through demonstrations, guided practice, teacher-led discussions and individual project work. They choose a garment such as a jacket or dress and work on more complex makes including tops, skirts, trousers, jackets and dresses. The course covers fitting garments and adjusting patterns, attaching tailored jacket sleeves, using piping and bias binding, inserting zips, making buttonholes and button loops, and applying hand-sewing techniques for a refined finish. Feedback, discussion and self-assessment form part of the learning process.

Before you go

  • Participants need a tape measure, ruler, pencil, eraser, Scotch Magic Tape or another type of Sellotape, paper scissors, fabric scissors, dress pins, hand-sewing needles, an A4 binder or folder, and a notebook or binder with paper.
  • Pattern notchers, dressmaker’s chalk, tracing wheels and a French curve are optional. Learners are responsible for purchasing their own pattern, materials and trims.
