Clothesmaking for beginners: making a toile from a commercial pattern

About this course

Participants learn to interpret commercial patterns, use lay plans, cut and mark fabric accurately, and construct garment toiles using a sewing machine. Projects develop progressively through skirt, trouser and top toiles, with techniques including seams, darts, hems and zips. Teaching combines demonstrations, handouts, guided exercises and individual support, with informal assessment through practical making and ongoing feedback. The course also introduces garment construction and pattern use through structured studio-based sessions.

The course is intended for beginners, including people with no previous sewing experience, and suits learners who prefer structured, project-based practical sessions. Complete beginners are encouraged to take a preliminary sewing machine course to develop basic machine skills before starting.
