Clothesmaking for Beginners

About this course

Participants develop foundational clothesmaking skills through demonstrations, verbal instruction, practical work, one-to-one and group activities, and discussions. The course covers sewing-machine use, body measurement, pattern sizing, fabric characteristics, pattern layout and construction techniques such as gathering and darts. Learners follow tutor-set projects to produce a simple garment from a commercial pattern, while interpreting pattern instructions and applying health and safety practice. They also create samples of sewing techniques for a portfolio, with progress recorded through an individual learning plan and tutor feedback.

What you'll learn

• Operate a sewing machine, including threading it and winding the bobbin.
• Take body measurements and use them to select an appropriate pattern size.
• Identify basic fabrics and describe aspects of their characteristics and construction.
• Lay out and cut a commercial pattern on fabric accurately.
• Apply sewing techniques such as gathering and darts when constructing a garment.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for beginners as well as learners with some previous clothesmaking or garment-making experience. It follows a structured programme rather than a workshop format, with tutor-set projects, demonstrations, practical work and group and individual activities. Regular attendance is expected, and learners must be able to take notes.

Before you go

• Sewing machines and some basic equipment are provided.
• Learners are expected to purchase a sewing kit including a measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, thread and marking chalk.
• Learners must buy a pattern, fabric, trimmings, thread and any other equipment needed for their chosen garment; requirements vary by pattern and fabric.
• The tutor advises on equipment purchases during the first lesson.
• Learners must be able to take notes.
