About this course
Learners develop clothesmaking skills through tutor-set projects rather than an open workshop format. The course covers fabric composition, body measurement, pattern sizing and the selection of suitable fabrics for a commercial pattern. Participants interpret pattern instructions, prepare and cut fabric, and construct a garment using varied sewing techniques and safe working practices. Advanced techniques are explored through sample-making. Pattern making is not included, and the chosen garment project is discussed with the tutor at the start of the course.
What you'll learn
- Produce samples using advanced clothesmaking techniques
- Assess fabric composition and select suitable fabric for a commercial pattern
- Take accurate body measurements and compare them with a pattern to choose a size
- Interpret commercial pattern instructions and lay out and cut pattern pieces correctly
- Construct a garment using a range of sewing techniques and safe working practices
Is this course right for you?
The course is aimed at advanced learners who have completed beginners and improvers clothesmaking courses, as well as new learners with significant previous sewing experience. Regular attendance is expected because learners follow a set programme and tutor-directed projects. Learners must be able to take notes, use sewing equipment safely and have reasonably good hand-eye coordination.
- Strongly recommended preparation includes the Clothesmaking Improvers course or equivalent previous knowledge
- Learners work on tutor-set projects rather than choosing an independent workshop project
- Regular attendance is expected to maintain progress
Before you go
- Sewing machines and some basic equipment are provided.
- Learners are expected to buy a sewing kit including a measuring tape, pins, scissors, sewing needles, thread and marking chalk.
- Learners need to purchase a pattern, fabric, trimmings, thread and any additional equipment required for their chosen garment. The tutor advises on equipment purchases at the first lesson.
