About this course

This course examines how to coach improvisers in classes and rehearsals, including the coach’s role, learner needs, teaching methods, boundaries and communication. Participants practise teaching exercises, side-coaching scenes and giving focused feedback, while also addressing lesson planning, timing and teaching administration. The course includes a short participant-led class with guest students, followed by individual feedback. Participants may also observe classes and teach under supervision, receiving personalised feedback and opportunities to discuss their teaching. The training focuses on applying existing improv knowledge rather than introducing fundamental improv theory.

What you'll learn

  • Define the role and responsibilities of an improv coach
  • Establish boundaries and communicate expectations in learning and rehearsal settings
  • Adapt communication and teaching methods to different learners and contexts
  • Teach exercises safely and provide sensitive side-coaching
  • Plan and structure lessons or rehearsals around a specific learning outcome
  • Lead post-scene feedback and manage lesson timing

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for experienced improvisers who want to teach or coach others. Its Advanced level reflects a focus on developing coaching practice rather than learning core improv theory, so participants are expected to bring substantial understanding of improv techniques.

  • Completion of the provider’s Game of the Improv Scene course is required
  • A strong understanding of improv theory is expected
  • Experience as a member of an improv team is expected
