Combine Print Techniques – Linocut and Silkscreen

About this course

The course introduces silkscreen printing from initial image preparation through to printing. Participants will stretch and coat screens, create photographic or hand-drawn artwork, adjust images in Photoshop, expose them onto photosensitive emulsion and process the screens into permanent stencils. Teaching combines examples, tutor demonstrations, group discussion and practical work. Participants will print onto paper and other surfaces, experiment with colour and texture, and practise registering and overprinting screens to build layered images. Personal projects are encouraged, with advice and individual tutorials available during the course.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for complete beginners as well as experienced printmakers exploring new ideas. The all-levels label indicates that participants with different levels of familiarity can take part. Photoshop knowledge may be useful but is not essential. Learning includes group discussion, practical activity, personal project development and individual guidance.

Before you go

• Bring pencils, a small paintbrush and a sketchbook or notebook.
• Participants are advised to bring protective clothing and rubber gloves.
• Basic materials, including screens, squeegees, ink binder, starter paper and one screen mesh, are supplied.
• Any other specific materials must be provided by the learner.
• Health and safety procedures are explained during the course. Participants should inform the tutor about pregnancy or sensitivities because some chemicals may cause harm or irritation.
• The studio does not have vacuum suction beds; individual screens are attached to hinged boards on work benches.
