About this course

Participants develop original pieces using provided stimuli and compositional frameworks, alongside their own musical ideas. Teaching covers rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, formal, conceptual and contextual considerations, with discussion focused on how works develop for performance. Classes divide time between analysing existing repertoire and reviewing participants’ projects. Feedback is provided by the tutor and group, and pieces may be performed in class, by Morley groups or through external opportunities. The course accommodates approaches including standard notation, text scores, improvisation and computer-based composition.

What you'll learn

  • Analyse existing music to identify compositional techniques
  • Apply formal and orchestrational considerations when writing for mixed ensembles
  • Develop rhythmic, melodic, harmonic, formal, conceptual and contextual aspects of original work
  • Use tutor and class feedback to refine an ongoing composition project
  • Write a piece intended for consideration by performers, including a possible workshop performance by Morley’s Advanced Chamber group

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for composers and music-makers working in any idiom, at all levels. Participation combines group analysis and discussion with independent composition work between classes, including regular homework. Standard notation, instrumental or vocal performance, and composition software may be useful but are not essential.

  • Previous attendance on Composition Workshop A or B is not required
  • Learners should be prepared to develop work independently outside class
  • The course includes tutor and group feedback on works in progress
  • Regular attendance and punctuality are expected

Before you go
