About this course

The course explores Western calligraphy through historical models and examples of traditional and contemporary work. Participants practise scripts such as Italic and Copperplate using square-edge and pointed nibs, brushes and ruling pens, examining how each tool affects letterforms. Teaching combines presentations, demonstrations and guided practice with individual and group assistance. Sessions also address spacing, simple layout and developing a piece from initial roughs to a finished project, with group critique forming part of the learning process.

What you'll learn

  • Construct Italic-style letterforms with a square-cut nib or brush at an appropriate angle
  • Form Copperplate-style letters using pressure and release with a pointed nib or brush
  • Apply spacing between letters, words and lines when writing a block of text
  • Use simple layout techniques to organise written text visually
  • Plan a calligraphy project from preliminary roughs through to a final piece
  • Experiment with less conventional tools, including ruling pens, balsa wood and twigs
