About this course

The course examines contemporary cinema as it develops, considering selected current films alongside critics’ choices, awards and wider film history. Sessions use film extracts, including longer sequences where appropriate, to explore technique, style, themes and motifs. Teaching combines tutor introductions with small- and large-group discussion, weekly previews and reviews of films watched by participants, and analysis of whether films are best understood through cinema, online viewing, mainstream traditions or arthouse approaches. A tutor-edited remix or mashup is also used to prompt discussion of film style and technique.

  • Analyse aspects of contemporary cinema and its changing context
  • Identify recurring themes and motifs in current films
  • Apply basic film-analysis methods to extracts and longer sequences
  • Compare class responses with critics’ and awards bodies’ assessments
  • Develop verbal or written critiques of films
