Contemporary Jewellery Wednesday Evening

About this course

Participants develop contemporary jewellery designs from research, either responding to a project brief or pursuing their own ideas. The course introduces techniques suited to each project and uses test pieces to explore possible approaches before making finished work. Teaching includes guidance on developing designs, group discussions, show-and-tell sessions and regular one-to-one conversations with the tutor. Workshop time is used to realise designs and investigate different materials and methods.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for intermediate jewellery makers who have previous experience and have attended a beginners’ class. The work involves developing independent projects, discussing ideas with the group and experimenting with contemporary jewellery approaches.

• Previous jewellery-making experience is required
• Learners should be able to work independently
• The course includes group discussions and show-and-tell sessions
• Regular individual discussions with the tutor support project development

Before you go

• All tools needed for the course are available in the workshop.
• Basic materials, including base metals, paper, acrylics and enamel, are provided in reasonable quantities.
• Learners may need to purchase project-specific items such as precious metals, stones, saw blades and specific-sized drill bits.
• A sketchbook, pens or pencils, found objects or unusual materials, an apron and a hair band for long hair may be brought to class.
• The workshop is on the third floor and has lift access.
• Some chemicals used in the workshop may be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant learners should inform the tutor for advice about precautions.
