About this course
Participants develop paintings from initial ideas, sketches or photographic source material towards sustained works or a series. Projects examine how contemporary artists use imagery, materials and process, with experimentation involving paint, drawing, mixed media, collage, layering and projections. Teaching combines practical projects with individual tutor guidance, group discussion and examination of artists’ work. Learners are encouraged to reflect on decisions made during the development of their own paintings and to consider visual language and issues in contemporary painting. Independent study outside the studio is recommended, with course resources and peer sharing available through a virtual learning environment.

Is this course right for you?
The course is intended for intermediate painters developing their own ideas and working methods. It requires prior experience in painting methods and processes, with learners expected to take part in self-directed projects, group discussion and reflective consideration of their work. Independent study outside class is recommended.
- Previous painting experience up to intermediate level is required
- The course includes individual guidance alongside group discussion
- Learners should be prepared to undertake independent study between sessions
Before you go
- Basic painting and drawing materials are available as part of the course.
- Learners are advised to bring an A5 or A4 sketchbook for recording ideas, notes and feedback, along with imagery to support projects.
- Learners may bring their own brushes and painting tools, as well as canvas or board as their work develops.
