Contemporary relief printmaking

About this course

Participants explore contemporary relief printmaking through lino cutting and block printing, developing images for printing before carving, inking and producing prints by hand or press. The course also covers colour, layering and composition, with opportunities to develop independent ideas and a personal visual approach. Teaching combines demonstrations, presentations, guided exercises, practical studio work, tutor feedback and group discussion. Assessment is informal and based on work made during the course, including a small collection of finished prints.

Is this course right for you?

The course is intended for adults aged 19 and over, from beginners to learners with some creative experience. No previous printmaking knowledge is needed. Participants work through guided practical exercises and may develop independent projects at their own pace, with tutor support and group discussion.

Before you go

• Basic materials are provided at the start, including an A5 metal plate for learning techniques.
• The studio has etching presses and specialist tools.
• Personal protective equipment is provided where required, including for processes using solvents.
• Additional plates, papers or tools may be purchased through the college at cost price.
