About this course

Participants will use the sketchbook as a visual diary, recording observations, testing materials and developing ideas for larger studio works. Drawing and mixed-media activities address visual language, including line, tone, texture, shape, form, colour and composition, with reference to exploratory sketchbooks by contemporary artists. Teaching combines demonstrations, practical exercises, examples, handouts, one-to-one tuition and informal group presentations and reviews. Work takes place both in the studio and on location, with opportunities to reflect on and discuss individual approaches.

What you'll learn

  • Experiment with a range of drawing materials, media and techniques
  • Record and gather visual information in studio and location settings
  • Develop personal themes and compositional ideas for larger works
  • Adapt materials and media to support individual artistic intentions
