Cosplay propmaking

About this course

The course explores the making of costume accessories and small props, including hats, headdresses, masks and other designs recreated from photographs. Topics include clay and pliable-material modelling, mould making, life casting, larger-scale work, paint effects, finishes and simple stitching. Teaching combines demonstrations with short practical tasks, supported by one-to-one guidance and group discussion. Learners are encouraged to carry out independent research and investigation outside class, though this is not compulsory.

• Sculpt models using clay, Styrofoam and other pliable materials.
• Cast models in plaster, alginate or silicone rubber.
• Use basic stitching techniques to assemble templates.

Is this course right for you?

This course is intended for beginners, and the provider states that no previous experience is necessary. Learners with some experience are also welcome. Participation includes practical tasks, individual guidance and group discussions, with independent research encouraged but not required.

Before you go

• Basic materials are supplied.
• Learners may be asked to bring images or objects to support particular tasks.
• Bring a sketchbook, pencils and a pen for sketching and note-taking.
• A camera or smartphone is useful for documenting work in progress.
• Sturdy, closed-toe shoes are required. Old clothes or overalls are strongly recommended.
• Personal protective equipment is provided and must be worn where required.
